Signal Gongs
The gong’s reverberating sound is one of the reasons why it is often used as a signal sound. For example, the signal bell found on trams, streetcars, cable cars is known as a gong. It is a variation of the bowl gong. You can typically see this on the front of the leading car. It is also used as a signal for rail crossing. Rail crossing usually have a flashing traffic signal and paired with a warning bell also known as a gong. It is struck by an electric powered hammer to give pedestrians and motorists a loud enough warning that a train is crossing. Boxing gongs is another type of the bowl gong used for boxing matches.
