Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. The Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage takes in elephants and rhinos which were orphaned by illegal poaching. Elephants and rhinos are two of the big 5 Africa animals that you have to see while in Nairobi. Here you can interact with them and not just see them from afar, something you’re only limited to do when on a safari.

Westlands. Westlands is a hip district in Nairobi where you can dine at great restaurants, listen to local music at bars, and dance the night away at nightclubs. It’s the perfect place to unwind in Nairobi.

Pacific Business News, Hawaii’s leading business periodical, is saying that Hawaiian Airlines’ new plan for cheap Hawaii inter island flights is not meeting the expectations of the local market.  According to the article, many local residents in Hawaii are clamoring for a program like they had years ago when they could buy coupons for cheap Hawaii interisland flights on Hawaiian or ton the now defunct Aloha Airlines for less than $50 one way.  Hawaiian’s new “neighbor island travel plan” offers four packages ranging from $4,588 to $512 for tickets to be used over a 12 month period.  The cheapest plan amounts to 4 one way tickets at $64 each.

While Hawaiian is trying to position the plan as plan for local residents, it is actually available to anyone that has membership in Hawaiian’s frequent flyer program.  Additionally, the article notes that, unlike the old coupon plan, tickets purchased under this new program are nontransferable and children under 12 are not eligible for the discounts.

A quick check of fares from Honolulu to Maui in January 2012 shows Hawaiian’s lowest one way website fares to be around $80 one way.  Often times, people complain that the airline’s prices for Hawaii inter island flights are higher than flying to the mainland.  Based on what we’ve seen so far, it typically is not the case.  But sometimes Hawaiian’s one way interisland fares are as high as $200 including taxes and fees.  So when any airline, including Hawaiian, offers airfares from Honolulu to the west coast of about $400 round trip, that is about the same price as the highest interisland fares being offered by Hawaiian.  So when this happens, considering a flight to the mainland takes over 5 hours and when an interisland flight usually is less than an hour, it’s no wonder people may think that, somehow, the numbers do not add up.

I was reading some information in a travel magazine. It was discussing areas in London. I found it really interesting to read about. I definitely wanted to visit the area on a trip at some point. It was a destination that I had never been to. It would be a great experience to see the areas in person. I wanted to discuss it with my husband. He had some vacation time coming. I knew that it would be interesting for us.

If there would be another APEC event or any other event like this in the future, it is questionable whether this would be helpful to many types of businesses in Hawaii.  First, it’s may discourage other people from making Hawaii travel plans during any time such an event like APEC would be staged again.  Plus, assuming the anecdotal evidence is correct, only the hoteliers are going to benefit, not the people who run tours, souvenir shops and shopping centers, etc. around the event.  As a result, it would be beneficial for some group or agency to better assess the economic impact on an event like APEC from a more comprehensive and quantifiable perspective.
