What Causes Hammer toes?

Hammer toes generally occurs in one of two situations. One can occur if the shoe is to short and pushes the toe back, or it can occur if the big toe develops a bunion and pushes the toe over to the side making it unstable. Hammer toes usually only affect the second toe or the toe next to the big toes as this is usually the longest. Sometime the third or fourth toe can be affected. But the biggest problems with hammer toes are the pressure corns that can develop on the end of the toe and on top of the toe from shoe pressure.
